A Warmer Planet Will Affect All Actuarial Practice Areas

A Warmer Planet Will Affect All Actuarial Practice Areas

I have followed with interest all of the excellent commentary on our warming climate and its impact on property and casualty issues (“Extreme Outcomes,” November/December 2023), but I find myself significantly puzzled at the lack of attention given to the effects such will definitely have on health issues. We have already seen some northern migration of tropical diseases, for which many medical providers in the U.S. are not trained to diagnose. Add to that the World Health Organization noting that a warming climate may be contributing to “superbug” infections and growing antimicrobial resistance.

Is it time for greater attention to be paid to a warming climate and its follow-on effects by our fellow actuaries practicing in the life and health arenas?
