Agenda Preview: Retirement Breakout Sessions at Envision Tomorrow

WHO: Retirement actuaries

WHAT: Breakout sessions focused on the current and future state of defined benefit plans and reforming Social Security

WHERE: Grand Hyatt Washington, Washington, D.C.

WHEN: Oct. 15–16

HOW: Register for “Envision Tomorrow” before the Sept. 13 early deadline.

WHY: Summer is coming to a close, so the Academy wants to draw your attention to our quickly approaching 2024 annual meeting, Envision Tomorrow. This event brings actuaries, policymakers, and thought leaders together to discuss key “mega-issues” with wide-reaching implications: health care, climate change, retirement security, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and risk management.

There will be two retirement practice-focused breakout sessions at the event. The first, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. EDT, looks at the uptick in interest in defined benefit (DB) pensions. Some employers are exploring new opportunities to provide retirement benefits to their employees at a time when more workers and retirees are losing confidence in their ability to have enough money to live comfortably throughout retirement. This session will evaluate the current landscape of employer-sponsored retirement plans, the role DB plans could play going forward, the importance of lifetime income, and reforms that could reduce barriers to employers sponsoring DB plans. Panelists will offer perspective from Congress, employers, and consultants.

The second session, Wednesday afternoon at 12:45 p.m. EDT, will focus on Social Security reform options to close the financing gap and how the next administration may evaluate and consider proposed solutions to the federal program’s solvency problems and automatic cuts in benefits starting in 2034. The panel will include representatives from the Social Security Administration as well as Academy volunteers who were integral in the Academy’s recent paper, Reforming Social Security Sooner Rather Than Later.
