Agenda Preview: Health Breakout Sessions at Envision Tomorrow

WHO: Health actuaries

WHAT: Breakout sessions focused on health actuarial analysis, Medicare and Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

WHERE: Grand Hyatt Washington, Washington, D.C.

WHEN: Oct. 15–16

HOW: Register for “Envision Tomorrow” before the Sept. 13 early deadline.

WHY: Summer is coming to a close, so the Academy wants to draw your attention to our quickly approaching 2024 annual meeting, Envision Tomorrow. This event brings actuaries, policymakers, and thought leaders together to discuss key “mega-issues” with wide-reaching implications: health care, climate change, retirement security, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and risk management.

There will be three health practice-focused breakout sessions at the event. The first, Oct. 15 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, will focus on how adding or enhancing benefits, along with other indirect costs and non-financial outcomes, can impact health spending and health outcomes through a health equity perspective. Using behavioral health as a generalized framework, the session will offer some insights and considerations as actuaries look at the full complement of health benefits. The panel includes a diverse panel of experts, encompassing research, provider, large employer, and policy perspectives.

The second session, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. EDT, will bring together Medicare and Medicaid experts to discuss the dual-eligible population with a focus on state and federal policies impacting health care delivery for that unique population. This session will feature Tim Engelhardt, director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office.

The final session, Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. EDT, is the annual update from the CMS Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO). Panelists from CCIIO will provide an update on regulatory activities, focusing primarily on the ACA marketplaces. CCIIO will share updates about anticipated future changes to the ACA 2025 plan year rules and regulations while offering time for engaged questions and answers between the panelists. This session is particularly interactive—so come prepared with questions for the experts and the other attendees in the room!
