Kicking off the new year, the Academy has published its annual updated law manuals for casualty and life and health actuaries. These useful reference tools, the Life and Health Valuation Law Manual and the P/C Loss Reserve Law Manual, are available for purchase and download. 

Life and Health Valuation Law Manual 

The Life and Health manual contains information to help appointed actuaries know the NAIC model Standard Valuation Law and the model Actuarial Opinion and Memorandum Regulation requirements. It includes a concise summary of the valuation laws and the NAIC regulations for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, including:  

  • A current topics section outlining key valuation developments and specific state guidance; 
  • The current NAIC model laws and regulations that have an effect on reserve calculations; and 
  • The current actuarial guidelines from the NAIC Financial Examiners Handbook

New in this year’s Life and Health manual are changes made in 28 states/territories, including statutory changes in 18 states/territories. 

P/C Loss Reserve Law Manual 

The P/C loss reserve law manual is designed to help appointed actuaries know the requirements for statements of actuarial opinion. It contains a compilation of insurance laws relating to P/C loss and loss expense reserves for all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, including:  

  • SAO requirements and the laws and regulations establishing those requirements; 
  • Annual statement instructions for the SAO for property/casualty, title loss, and loss expense reserves; and 
  • Other pertinent annual statement instructions. 

New in this year’s P/C manual are changes made in 27 states/territories, including statutory changes in 11 states/territories.
